The West Red Lodge Creek drainage begins atop the 1 0,000-foot Red Lodge Creek Plateau at the base of Grass Mountain. The narrow canyon is tucked between Butcher Mountain and Bare Mountain and descends to the base of Sheep Mountain, just south of Luther. This hike follows the easy, lower portion of the trail in the foothills along West Red Lodge Creek. The trail leads to the mouth of the narrow rock canyon and a log bridge at the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness boundary. For a longer hike, Hike 1 3 continues steeply up to the alpine plateau.
