The East Rosebud Trail is a popular 26-mile hiking and horsepacking route to Cooke City. The majority of the trail parallels East Rosebud Creek, a major waterway in the Beartooth Mountains. The creek flows through ten lakes. The headwaters begin at Fossil Lake in the high backcountry atop the Beartooth Plateau, then flow southeast to East Rosebud Lake, the lowest lake in the chain. Seventy-six lakes and nine additional streams feed the creek.
