This heavily traveled route crosses Mountain, the tallest peak in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. It offers the easiest access to the Gates Park region in the Sun River Basin, and the pass itself is also a popular day hike destination. The latter part of the trail, to the west of Headquarters Creek Pass, traverses a particularly heavily burned section of the Gates Park fire. This part of the trail is exceedingly boggy.
