This trail provides an overnight trip of only moderate difficulty to spectacular Sunburst Lake, which is nestled at the foot of the north face of Swan Peak. In addition to its outstanding scenic views, Sunburst Lake provides high-quality fishing for native cutthroat trout. The lake can also be reached from the Napa Point trailhead via an alternate route along Inspiration Creek; this route received maintenance in 1993 and is passable although steep, rough, and washed out in several places along the creek. Maintenance will continue on an occasional basis.

This trail would be especially good for a beginning backpacker. The hike isn't too long, the elevation is gradual, and there's a good mix of great scenery - first the gorge of Gorge Creek, then Swan Peak, and finally the beautiful cirgue at Sunburst Lake. Drawbacks - limited access to water along the way, limited number of campsites (though there certainly are spots you could bushwhack down to Gorge Creek), and a trailhead at least two hours from a main highway.
