This is a long day hike or backpack from St. Mary Trailhead to Red Eagle Lake. Red Eagle Lake lies in a gentle, low-elevation valley that provides surprisingly scenic hiking to the few travelers that venture this way. More adventurous hikers may choose to follow the trail all the way to Triple Divide Pass and beyond into the Cut Bank Creek country. The trail passes through the Red Eagle burn of 2006 and offers a great chance to see how vegetation and wildlife bounce back after fire. The trail starts as an old dirt road (the original access to St. Mary) below the foot of St. Mary Lake near the old ranger station and leaves the lakeshore quickly to wind through a dense, old stand of windblown Douglas firs. This road winds on through stands of aspen and huge open meadows filled with wildflowers, which offer views of the snowcapped peaks up the St. Mary Valley.
