A rugged, alpine environment accessible with a short (but steep) hike. Although this route could be done as an overnighter, the Glacier Lake area seems nicely suited to a long day of exploring, fishing, photographing, and simply enjoying high-elevation majestic vistas. It’s easily accessible by a 2-mile trail. The Forest Service has restricted stock use on this trail due to hazardous conditions for horses. The trail to Glacier Lake is short but very steep. The trailhead is at 8,680 feet and the lake is at 9,702 feet, but the route actually climbs more than the difference (1,022 feet )in the 2 miles to Glacier Lake. That’s because there’s a ridge in the middle that’s about 800 feet higher than the lake.
