An easy day hike up a very accessible canyon with a beautiful stream. This is a best easy day hike very accessible to all hikers in the Helena area. It’s also living proof that we can correct our mistakes, that development can be reversed. This trail used to be a road, and a well-traveled one at that, called the Figure Eight Route, a significant tourist attraction in the Helena area and promoted as such by the Helena National Forest and local chamber of commerce. Then in 1981 a flood washed away the road for the second time, and the Forest Service decided to make it a trail. After you hike through this picturesque canyon, send the agency a thank- you letter. The first mile of the trail has been made passable for wheelchairs and is very pleasant. Beautiful Trout Creek flows through this limestone-walled canyon.

Although this trail is very popular it is still a wonderful place to go. You can hike or ride in a ways and pitch a tent and hike to the lakes from there or camp at the lakes. It is fairly easy if you go up toward the lakes, it is in meadows and we usually see deer and various animals up there. The trail is well maintained and the backcountry horseman volunteer many hours keeping the trail in great shape.
