A fairly easy day hike to a gorgeous lake in the Great Bear Wilderness with good fishing and incredible views of Great Northern and Stanton Glacier. The Stanton Lake Trail 146 is well maintained and gently climbs through larch-fir forest to the lake. At 0.9 mile is a junction with Grant Ridge Trail 339.The Grant Ridge Trail to the left is a popular horse and outfitter trail, which climbs steeply up Grant Ridge for views of Great Northern and Mount Grant. Stay right (southwest), and after a little hump, you reach the foot of Stanton Lake, which has a small log-jam at the outlet. A strong hiker can make it to the lake in twenty to thirty minutes, but you may wish to take longer to enjoy the preserved forest of the Great Bear Wilderness.

A friend and I and my two Labs snow shoed up to the Lake today. There is 3- 4' of snow on the trail currently. It is a steep start, the trails levels out to go through a stand of young Tamaracks. You do a bit of side hilling then drop down to the Lake which is still frozen. From the foot of the Lake you are looking at Great Northern Mountain and Grant ridge a beautiful sight with all the snow and cornices. Very nice hike.
