A day hike or overnighter into a high mountain lake in a lightly used section of the Rattlesnake Wilderness. In 1980, Congress established the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness to provide a place where water, wilderness, wildlife, and recreational and educational values are preserved. Boulder Lake offers all. This hike presents a stark contrast between land preserved as wilderness and land open to timber cutting. All along the 16-mile gravel road to the trailhead and along the first 1.5 miles of the hike, you go through an endless ocean of clear-cuts before escaping into the solitude of the Rattlesnake Wilderness.
