An easy day hike or overnighter to a tranquil lake basin with lots of trout in the lakes and huckleberries along the trail. The proposed Great Burn Wilderness sprawls for almost 40 miles along the Bitter-root Divide west of Missoula. This short hike is sure to tantalize you with the hiking possibilities in this 200,000-acre area, one of the wildest roadless areas in Montana. From the trailhead Heart Lake Trail 171 climbs some 1,200 feet in 2 miles to the shore of Heart Lake, crossing the South Fork of Trout Creek several times—all on bridges except the last crossing just before the lake. This is a beautiful trail that goes through a lush, green forest all the way to the lake.

Awesome scenery and the trail is in pretty good shape. Very rocky in some areas, but easy to follow. Be sure to bring enough water as there isn't any along the route.
