A special day hike through an old-growth western red cedar forest and an optional trip up Sawtooth Peak or across Pillick Ridge, with superb views of the Cabinet Mountains and the Bull and Clark Fork Valleys. This route in the Ross Creek Cedar Grove Scenic Area definitely qualifies as a must-do hike for any hiker. Some of the ancient western red cedars are 500 years old, and we aren't talking about a few trees. We're talking about hundreds of giants all along the 2-mile trek to Ross Creek and even a few after that, if you decide to go farther--and not just cedars, but also some massive western white pines and grand firs, probably the best remnant of the old-growth forest that survived the chain saw in Montana.

guide description should be modified: walk in from gated trailhead is 1.5 miles along old vehicle trail to old trailhead (thru wooden gateposts), where narrow uphill trail begins... one mile up is lower Boulder Lake and jct to trail 62 leading up to Boulder Mountain. Lots of bear sign, and found snow fields in July under 7000'.
