Great trip. Not so much a trail as it is a really long beach walk. Definitely want to walk right on the water barefoot or in sandals because that's where the sand is the most packed. Camp as close to the water as possible, otherwise you'll get eaten by mosquitos and horseflies. By the water, where there is breeze, you'll be fine. There is plenty of wood to make a fire if you walk a little ways inshore, but to do before the sun goes down. I'd recommend brining a fishing rod, as surf fishing can provide dinner. Battled a sand shark for about half an hour around midnight, before my line broke. Great trip.
This is not really a trail, in the traditional sense. It's a hike along the beach, and your blazes are the KM (not mile) posts along the way. It's a beautiful area, the dunes and foliage on one side and the ocean on the other. Although flat, it's somewhat challenging to walk in the sand. Other factors here are the wind -- almost always blowing fairly briskly, except sunset and sunrise -- and the bugs, anytime before the first frost. You can count on the wind being against you at least one way, unless you're lucky and it changes while you're camping. I had a pretty stiff breeze hiking in. The bugs -- mosquitos and biting flies -- turned me back from a side trail to the bayside. You need serious100% DEET.
It's a little over four miles in and the same back to Little Levels backcountry camping, the northernmost ocean side camp area. It is very beautiful and relaxing to sleep in the dunes hearing the ocean all night. A nice camping area, with individual picnic tables and a chemical toilet. There is no fresh water here -- must be packed in. Your filter will do you no good. Also -- bring long tent stakes, because of the sand.
