Things can get a bit confusing in these parts, with so many competing parks (including Big Run and New Germany) and recreation areas, all contained within the 54,000-acre Savage River Forest. What makes the campsites in the state forest unique is that most guarantee almost total privacy. The Savage River sites sit spread like tentacles near and around Big Run and New Germany state parks and the Savage River Reservoir. Savage River Forest is Maryland’s largest protected site, and it includes some 12,000 acres of wildlands, which earn special protections. There are some 100 miles of trails throughout the forest, allowing you to pick a length and configuration and go. Fishing and boating are also popular in the forest.
