You know those Western hikes in which miles go by with only the cacti or an occasional butte lending variety to a uniform landscape? This trek is cut from different cloth, with so much diversity spilling out of it you’ll hardly feel the hours slip away. In addition to five scenic lakes, towering bluffs, no end of streams, glacial erratics by the truckload, and a number of memorable ruins, these woods are inundated with wildlife (including black bears), birds beyond count, and a spring flower display any horticulturalist would envy.

Awesome trail. A little bit of everything. easy to get lost.

This was one of the most challenging hikes I've experienced. The first mile is enough to have your lungs and your legs burning, but it's worth it. The trail guide gives you a good idea of what to look for and the blazes are pretty easy to spot. The only place that is a bit tricky is when you first pick up the yellow trail after the major scramble. So pay close attention otherwise you'll end up having to retrace your steps. Another word of caution, WATCH OUT FOR RATTLESNAKES! They're not kinding when they say to watch every handhold and foothold. I was face to face with one midway up the major scramble and it scraed the crap out of me. This hike takes every bit of six hours and I would not recommend it during the summer. The vast majority of the loop is totally exposed and the rocks heat up quickly.
