A small but beautiful pond that is a favorite picnic and paddle spot of nearby residents. Upper Spectacle Pond is a small, narrow lake with a prominent island rising from its center like a volcano emerging from the sea. As you paddle along the shore the east side is shallow and marshy while the west is deeper with stands of evergreens that shade and cool the water. The northern point of the bay is a pleasant refuge of wetlands and wildflowers, a perfect place to pull a book from the pack, settle back, and let time slip away. Upper Spectacle Pond is an oasis of peace and quiet in the rolling hills of the southern Berkshire Plateau. The narrow lake is cradled in the gentle defile of Spectacle Pond Brook with forested hills rising above the shore. Most prominent of these is Filley Mountain, a 1,700-foot-tall ridge above the east shore. The mountain directs the northwest winds in a graceful invisible arc that sweeps from the valley up the western ridge face. The air then swirls in unseen vortices that roll south along the mountainside. The air currents are used by raptors such as hawks to soar high above the forest. Part of the pleasure of paddling here is watching the redtails and broadwings surf the skies overhead.
