The hours can be easily idled away admiring the diverse forms of life in this mountainside meadow—if the amazingly beautiful view doesn’t monopolize your attention. Mountain Meadow was once a field, mowed a few times a year for the hay it would yield. It was never a very good hayfield. The soil was thin and rocky and the shallow bedrock created numerous seeps that made much of the meadow wet. If the meadow may have failed to provide for farmers, it gives generously to hikers. The expansive open fields have nearly endless mountain views, wildlife is abundant, and the diversity of plants makes exploring this sanctuary seem a timeless wonder.
