This out-and-back hike follows the Taconic Crest Trail, a quiet, long-distance hiking trail that stretches back and forth across the New York border for 35 miles. Nearby sections of the Shaker Trail pass by dozens of historic foundations, mills, carriage roads, and holy sites. This hike begins on the Griffin Trail, a broad, multi-use path marked with a sign at the start, but unblazed along its length. Like its neighbor, the Taconic Skyline Trail, it is heavily rutted with the tracks of ATV and dirt bike riders. These ruts have filled with mud, and subsequent riders have steered around them, widening the trail at several points to greater than 30 feet. The only redeeming point is that all the ruts are teeming with frogs in the spring and summer months (though they may live only long enough to see the next knobby tire roll through).
