It’s no secret that Cape Cod gets packed during the summer. Just look at MA 3 leading toward the Sagamore Bridge or I-495 and MA 25 leading toward the Bourne Bridge on a summer Friday night, and you’ll see lines of cars waiting to get on the Cape. What may be a secret, though, is that you can still find some solitude and wilderness on the Cape. Nickerson State Park, in Brewster, is home to some of those rare, remote spots.
Part of the reason Nickerson is such an incredible refuge is its size: it’s huge. Within its 1,955 acres and among its 418 campsites, you can find all sorts of places to quietly lose yourself in the rolling pine forests that blanket the park. This is one of the most densely forested areas on the Cape. The forest itself is beautiful, with loosely spaced balsams, firs, and pine.
