Compared to the rest of the White Mountains, Evans Notch is remote, out-of-the-way, and one of the less visited portions of the White Mountain National Forest. Straddling the Maine-New Hampshire border, the notch provides access to some excellent hiking, biking, and camping. This trip makes a short but steep climb to the Roost, a small peak at the northern end of the notch with great views to the south and west. The Roost sits high above the Wild River, a beautiful mountain stream that was once a major route for loggers 100 years ago. Today the forest along the Wild River and throughout Evans Notch has recovered well and seems as wild as it gets.
