A series of four short trails go up and around the distinctive Schoodic Head, allowing for a variety of loop or out-and-back hikes. The loop described here includes the Alder, Schoodic Head, and Anvil Trails, with options to loop down the East Trail or explore the new privately owned, park-run Schoodic Woods campground. The loop starts easily on the grassy and lush Alder Trail and then goes to rugged Schoodic Head and the knob known as the Anvil. At 0.6 mile the Alder Trail ends at a gravel road. Turn left (northwest) onto the road. At 0.7 mile turn right (northeast) onto the Schoodic Head Trail, ascending steeply at times. At 1.1 miles reach an open ledge with dramatic vistas to the west to faraway Mount Desert Island and Cadillac Mountain, Frenchman Bay, the Porcupine Islands, and Egg Rock and its lighthouse.

Possibly the most beautiful views of any hike I've taken. I went up the Schoodic Head trail, across from the Blueberry Hill parking lot, and came down the Anvil trail. About a 2-3 hour hike, with awesome scenery both up and down. There is a lot of scrambling over rocks, and a few steep ascents/ descents, so wear good hiking shoes.

This trail is a gem! The short climb through shaded woods and a few steepish pitches pays off in a panoramic downeast view including the Petit Manan lighthouse spire off Dyer Neck. We took the East trail, which wastes no time ascending from the parking area across the street. The best.
