This hard-to-reach trail offers some of the best views of all the trails up mostly wooded Bernard Mountain, the highest peak on Mount Desert Island west of Somes Sound. Alternating between steep ascents through vintage Acadia forest and open rock ledges, the West Ledge Trail provides increasingly sweeping views the higher you go. Highlights: Steep hike up Bernard Mountain’s open western ledges; good views.
