The Great Pond Trail is a pleasant walk offering the possibility of sunning on big, flat rocks or seeing dozens of herring gulls soar on the wind above what is also known as Long Pond. The trail can also serve as a jumping-off point for some of the challenging hikes up Western Mountain. Highlights: Mostly flat walk along southwest shore of Long (Great) Pond, the largest body of fresh water on Mount Desert Island.
