By the twentieth century natural resources here, as elsewhere in the Pine Barrens, had either been exhausted or ceased to be of commercial value. In the 1930s the Conrad family built a rustic cabin retreat here and used the tract for hunting. The New Jersey Conservation Foundation, recognizing the land’s natural value, bought it in the 1970s. Ocean County purchased its first Wells Mills acreage in 1985, establishing this fine county park. Today the sugar-sand roads that once guided woodcutters and sphagnum moss gatherers are a well-blazed and meticulously maintained sixteen-mile trail system.

This is a great place to get your trail legs, I have been here 5-6 times. It has several trails to choose from and the longest and most challenging is 8.4 miles. There are no great elevation changes but some hills. I like to come here, but when you're near the road the sound of traffic can ruin the solitude and the is a scout camp with a gun range nearby, so the sound of guns firing is not uncommon. When you get to the far side of the lake it is quite peaceful. So if you want a hike of any length this is a good spot.

This is my favorite trail. It has everything. Great exercise and a challenging terrain, beautiful scenery and solitude. I would recommend without hesitation.
