In addition to tremendous vistas, this trail offers a good workout and spectacular birding. Great blue herons sweep over the marsh and songbirds fill the air with their sweet voices. Wander through the Red Maple Swamp, where boardwalks curl through cinnamon and wood ferns under aged red maples. The boardwalk is expansive and unique to trails on the cape, and much needed in this very swampy hike. Mosquitoes thrive in this environment, so be sure to bring your bug spray in you visit in the summertime.

This trail had gorgeous views and history. There was boulder left when the glaciers moved through the area. There was a boulder used by the American Indians to sharpen their knives and arrows. You can still see the shiny, smooth surface where the sharpening was done. You walk in forest and open areas. In the forest area are some unique, misshapen red maple trees. The walk is moderate with some small, gradual hill areas. The only downfall for this trail were the deer flies. We were covered in Deep Woods Off-the highest possible repellant and they still were landing on us. We wound up walking the trail (yes-we perseverd and didn't turn back) waving our hats and arms around to keep the flies away from our eyes and face. We finally would up putting pieces of the Deep Woods towelettes in our ears. Unfortunately-because of the flies we didn't spend as much time looking at the views as we would have liked. This was the Red Maple Swamp Fort Hill Trail, not just the Fort Hill Trail. But the flies were prevalant on both trails.
