Hiking and history merge in the southwest corner of Vermont, where the famous Bennington Battle Monument shares eminence with nearby mountains. For the best view in town, visitors ride to an observation deck in the impressive 306-foot tower that commemorates a critical victory in the American Revolution. Regrettably, hikers don’t have a similar option for getting uphill. Plunked within walking distance of a city at the edge of a mountain range, “Bald” Mountain seems to promise great views in all directions, but thanks to a healthy growth of evergreens, the summit of this peak east of Bennington no longer lives up to its name. This is a half-day hike to a tree-clad summit known as Bald Mountain.
