The Breadloaf Wilderness’s 25,000 acres include 27 miles of the Long Trail and a chain of rugged 3,000-foot peaks. Views are precious in this forested region, but the streams, forests, trails, and shelters are a microcosm of the Green Mountains. Plus you’ll likely enjoy long stretches of solitude; not many hikers travel these trails. The hike uses Cooley Glen, Long, and Emily Proctor trails to loop clockwise around the headwaters of New Haven River near the center of the Wilderness Area. Along the way, visit melodious streams, climb over the Presidential summits of Mounts Cleveland (3,482), Roosevelt (3,550), and Wilson (3,790), and enjoy a few excellent views southeast. Dogs are permitted.
