Huntersville State Forest comprises 52 square miles of mostly red and jack pine forests with a scattering of aspen and spruce and a variety of northern hardwood covering rolling, sandy hills. The area is cut by two rivers, the Crow Wing and the Shell. Like most of Minnesota’s state forests, this one is managed for its forest resources but provides some recreational opportunities. Campsites are typically at water’s edge—the main activity is usually boating and fishing. The Shell River campsite is adjacent to a horse camp whose campers can use 22 miles of horse trails.
