Located on the southern shore of Lake of the Woods, this is Minnesota's most northern state park. It is situated along a 2-mile stretch of beach in a birch and jack pine forest overlooking the oceanic vastness of Lake of the Woods. The lake itself is an awesome body of water, nearly 1,500 square miles with almost 10 times as many islands throughout its waterways. Stand on the banks of Zippel Bay and look to the north--your eyes can't see across the 55 miles of water. I was at Zippel about a week past the full flush of fall colors. Even then, the golden canopy of birch leaves was almost blinding. Brilliant golden-yellow leaves at the end of the long, limber, powdery white tree trunks played beautifully against the blue sky overhead. There are four campgrounds at Zippel Bay: Lady's Slipper, Birch, Ridg, and Angler's.
