This is a straightforward hike on well-marked and age-worn trails. The complete trail, 40 miles long, stretches from Rapid River to M-94, near Munising. Running parallel to the Whitefish River, the trail recreates a portage route used by the Algonquian Noquet tribes traveling between Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Later, early European fur traders and loggers used the trail until a road was constructed. In some places, the centuries of use are evident in the deeply worn trail.
