Isle Royale is the epitome of untamed wilderness in the Upper Peninsula. To reach it requires a lengthy ferry ride across miles of Lake Superior’s deeps. If you’re willing to do the extra planning required for a trip here, you will be well rewarded. This island is an environment unlike any other available in the Midwest, boasting 612 species of lichens (about 200 more than any other national park) and thirty-two species of orchids. The island also supports a thriving moose population and a small wolf pack, but has no white-tailed deer or bears. Moose sightings here are not uncommon.
