This stretch of trail is quietly persuasive. An older, open maple forest that is a pleasure to the eye lines the first few miles. The forest leads to a convoluted cliff band rising from a trailside slope, reminiscent of some long ago fortification. A cedar swamp, conveniently crossed on a boardwalk, follows the rock wall. Better yet, a classic Northwoods attraction--an impressive 150-foot-long beaver dam--rounds out the day. Begin your hike by walking 135 paces south on East Lake Road to the signed NCT crossing. Walk east on the NCT, and Guard Lake appears to your right (east) at Mile 0.2. For the next quarter-mile, the trail rounds that pond’s west side before heading north into a beautiful, open maple forest and reaching FR 3114 at Mile 1.1.
