The name Two Hearted River is full of mystery and romance. Ernest Hemingway’s short story “Big Two Hearted River” gave the river icon status--a back-of-beyond stream of the north where the trout were large and life was good. There is abundant evidence that Hemingway was fibbing to camouflage his favorite fishing hole, the Fox River; but the mythology took root and grew. Today the mouth of the Two Hearted River is a remote outpost. Graded dirt roads lead there, but it is a good 15 miles to the pavement in any direction. A campground, small store, and grass airstrip add to the end-of-the-road character of the place. Highlights: Lake Superior shoreline and the fabled mouth of the Two Hearted River.
