When it comes to sand dunes, the Grand Sable is a knockout. Three hundred feet high and 5 miles long, this massive tan headland towers over the deep blue of Lake Superior. The hike loops around the dunes, first skirting their inland edge where forests meet sand slopes. Then the route plunges from the crest of the dunes to the lakeshore, an adventurous descent that leads to a route along a wild shoreline, beneath the towering dunes. Finally the hike winds along Sable Creek, past Sable Falls.
