Having a vast stretch of Lake Superior shoreline to yourself has a way of growing on you. The appeal deepens when you realize that much of that shoreline features a tilted bedrock stratum, a playful obstacle course for nimble hikers, and a haven for miniature wildflower gardens tucked into rocky nooks and crannies. The trail descends and occasionally rises slightly to shallow ridges that mark ancient shorelines. Exploring the rock glades that dot these rises can yield rich rewards: secluded ledges with Lake Superior views. At Mile 1.3 a conglomerate spine of rock, a “whaleback,” parallels the trail for 150 paces, offering more views and an alternative route for agile hikers.

This was an awesome trail! My wife and I were able to make it an overnight trip. The views of Lake Superior are magnificent and there are plenty of good campsites.
