Waterfall fans have many incredible choices in the western U.P., but it’s difficult to top the drama of the Presque Isle and Black Rivers making thunderous descents to Lake Superior. Like a peerless set of twins, both rivers sport a parade of waterfalls that stand tall in any short list of U.P. whitewater shows. Better yet, both sets of cascades are compact, creating outstanding hikes. This hike tours the westernmost of those two streams—the Black River—as it tumbles through a delightful gorge to Lake Superior. First the route skirts the river’s mouth at Black River Harbor and ascends its east side to the perfect vantage point for Rainbow Falls. After off ering that memorable view, the trail returns to the river’s west side, passing four waterfalls before arriving at Conglomerate Falls. From that cascade the route returns to the river mouth.
