The Wilderness Trail, Meramec State Park’s longest hike, is beautiful and remote. You’ll enjoy splendid solitude as you wander past caves, springs, bluffs, glades, and hundreds of rock outcroppings and ledges. With ten backpack camps scattered along its length, the Wilderness Trail is an excellent trek for day hikers and backpackers alike.

Today's hike was gorgeous. Weather was perfect! The leaves were turning quite nice. My wife and I started on the Goat Cliff trail which travels north. We took its turn back east and south to enjoy three fantastic overlooks. McAdams Peak is given a special name, but the overlook before that was actually nicer. We cut back down towards the Visitor's center by using the Hickory and Oak trails for a hike that was over 2 miles. What you gain in fantastic weather you lose in privacy. The trails were a bit too crowded this day, which was a turnoff. What I really enjoy is solitude and overnight backpacking. Illinois State Parks don't cater to the backpacking, and Pere Marquette, on this fantastic day, couldn't offer the solitude. Oh well.

Good hike for Southern Illinois. A few nice outlooks and a lot of time in the woods away from highways, etc. Trails are well maintained. A great day hike.
