At Meramec State Park’s visitor center, a beautiful mural depicts a majestic bluff towering above the river, with an exquisite cascade gushing from a cave in its face. Here’s the second of two unmarked “bushwhack” routes to the scenic natural wonder that is Green’s Cave. Bring your topo map and compass or GPS—and your camera—on this wild hike.

The trail was easy and relaxing; however, my husband and I got lost because the trail was very poorly marked. We started following the orange streamers on the trees, thinking that those were trail markers. However, at a certain point the streamers ended and we continued to walk the trail until it reached the park boundary. At that point, it was getting dark and there was no trail at all to follow. We were totally lost. Eventually, we called 911 and the park ranger picked us up.
