A hidden Gem. Amazing trail. Short and sweet. Steep cliffs, creek and deep canyon.
I recommend visiting in the Fall, Winter or early Spring before it is covered with vegetation. You will see more of the canyons great expanse.
It's easy to add this short hike into a weekend trip to nearby Hawn State Park. Don't write it off just because the trail is only 1.5 miles -- You won't believe you're in Missouri as you start to explore the Hickory Canyons area. We could have spent hours on the short east-side trail exploring the box canyon. The moss and fern gardens are so nearly perfect, it's almost as if they were landscaped. Read Steve Henry's trailguide for the naturalist details. All I could say on a beautiful sunny Mother's Day morning was WOW. Triple big bonus stars for this one. The hike on the west side of Sprott Road was not quite the jaw-dropper but still a lot of fun.
