Hike in the company of various shorebirds, gaze across Lake Erie, and stick your toes in the water, if you wish, at one of Lake County’s newer park properties. In 2012, 139 acres on Lake Erie’s shore—tucked behind established industrial and residential developments, yet relatively unspoiled—were officially opened to the public as a Lake (County) Metropark and were later expanded to 600 acres. In addition to nearly 3 miles of hiking trails, Lake Erie Bluffs boasts several scenic overlooks, a natural beach, fishing, and fantastic birding opportunities. The land mix includes coastal marshes and prairies, plus lake access. No lifeguards are on duty, so swimmers assume all risk. There are also no boat ramps. Kayaks may enter and exit the lake from the beach, but you must carry your equipment to and from the parking lot. The beach access here is chiefly that: access, so we can soak up and savor the lake at its natural best.
