Other than perhaps Rock Island, this is the quietest of Door County’s excellent state parks. Two of the park’s several trails combine to make a sort of dumbbell trek through pristine forest with occasional Lake Michigan shoreline views and access. When it comes to finding a long walk along the state’s Lake Michigan shore, this route is in the running for top honors. Newport State Park gets a thumbs up for its size, with its 11 miles of shoreline and 20 miles of trail. Best of all, this place has ambiance. The shoreline is a quiet one, and the forest is a notable beauty. Development at the park is minimal and likely to stay that way; the area has semi-wilderness status. This hike’s route takes you first to Newport’s north end, back past the trailhead, and then to the park’s southern part.

Spent the night in a campsite on Duck Cove(?). very chjilly. The full loop is beautiful and very quiet. Saw only 3 people while on the Europe loop trail. The movement from lake shore to forest is beautiful. A fairly easy walk but LONG. Only wildlife other than shore birds was a wild turkey and porcupines at the camp.
