This fantastic trek through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest passes ten lakes on its enormous loop, most of them only reachable by hikers. Plan for a full day of hiking or consider staying the night. The Hidden Lakes Trail has no trouble living up to its name. Ten lakes border this route, with eight of them tucked away in quiet corners of the forest. The ambiance is noteworthy. This path meanders past lakes and wanders through hemlock groves with hardly a cabin or building in sight during the entire length of the hike. Its 13.0-mile length makes it a good choice for an energetic day hike or an overnight backpack. Begin the loop at the Franklin Lake Nature Trail parking lot. Walk south, following the nature trail loop as it swings east through an ancient grove of hemlock trees.

This is a beautiful and well-maintained trail through the Nicolet forest. There are many dispersed camping sites on/near the trail where one could stop and camp. The trail is easy to get to and follow. I would recommend breaking it up into two days unless you are a very fit hiker. The weather in the area is usually not hot and the trail is shady and breezy, so a warm summer day still feels good. Strong mosquito repellent is a must. Much of the trail is swarming with gnats and the mosquitoes are ever-present.
