One of Wisconsin’s most impressive rivers and a National Scenic Riverway, the St. Croix is bordered at this point by a state forest. This trail heads north through a pristine river corridor full of wildlife and dozens of lush springs, traversing floodplains and bluffs alike. Before I hiked this route, I expected the St. Croix River to be impressive. It is. This is a notably pristine large river, and the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act protects more than 250 miles of its watershed. Eagles nest on the river’s shoreline, otters romp on the banks, and rare mussels inhabit the riffles.
