The St. Croix River, running swift, clear, and broad alongside this hike’s route, is a pristine marvel. Its clean waters support a notably rich and diverse array of freshwater mussels. Above the river, eagles and ospreys patrol and find this stretch pleasant enough to nest nearby. Wolves use the river as a travel corridor, and two packs are in residence just a few miles north of this hike. Species-wise, this is a happening place.
