This is a bit of a short hike, but the steps may make you break a sweat. The three out- and-back trails take you to viewing platforms where you can see an impressive series of waterfalls. One trail ends at the river’s edge a short distance downstream from the Lower Falls. Potato River Falls, a compact series of drops, has two named features, the Upper Falls and the Lower Falls. The Upper Falls has two 20-foot drops. That cascade starts with a plunge down a bedrock chute, bounces off boulders, and drops again. A few hundred feet downstream, the river spreads out across a black lava shelf and drops another 30 feet at the spectacular Lower Falls.
