The mightiest of the Great Lakes is your companion on this trek, which follows the narrow sandy shoreline preserved from development by the Brule River State Forest. Cross creek outlets and admire driftwood deposits before heading back the way you came. This hike is along a splendid, untamed shoreline, chock-full of solitude and broad lake views. An otter accompanied me when I did this walk, swimming off shore, for half a mile. Ospreys patrolled the coast. A wolf-kill deer, blood not yet congealed, lay just off the beach. Paw prints spoke of a hurried departure. I had seen a blur, and probably had flushed them.
