Lake of the Woods and Rainy River are great fishing grounds if you like walleye. Fishing, swimming, and hiking are only a few recreation opportunities at Zippel Bay State Park, where wildlife is prolific and bird watching is a popular activity. Numerous flowers including four species of lady’s slippers, a variety of edible berries including cranberries and Juneberries, and edible mushrooms grow along the hiking trail and in the woods. This is a place where you are likely to see sandhill cranes, white pelicans, and double-crested cormorants, along with several species of shore birds. It’s also home to the endangered piping plover.
