Buffalo River State Park is one of many western Minnesota areas where prairie preservation is going on. With 900 acres of grassland as a part of its 1,322 acres, it joins The Nature Conservancy Lands and Moorhead State University Regional Science Center in preserving 5,000 acres-one of the largest of Minnesota’s remaining grasslands. The trail takes you through a portion of prairie but also along the beautiful Buffalo River where northern pike, walleye, and channel cat sh are common catches. The Buffalo winds its way from tiny LakeTamarack for 88 miles to the North Dakota border, dropping 635 feet, where it drains its gathered waters into the Red River. Along the way, you’re likely to see deer, evidence of beaver activity, and other wildlife. The park has 12 miles of hiking trails through prairie and along the river.
