A popular bird haven, Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge lies along the Minnesota River Valley, where the prairies and floodplains provide habitat for approximately 226 species of migrating or nesting birds—including songbirds, waterfowl, and birds of prey. The refuge has much to offer its visitors. It consists of eight units totaling more than 11,000 acres, miles of hiking trails, and a modern visitor center with 8,000 square feet of exhibit space, several classrooms, an observation deck, and a bookstore. The Louisville Swamp Unit has 13 miles of interconnecting trails that take you up onto high blurs overlooking wetlands, across Sand Creek, and through open prairie, upland forest, and oak savanna.
