People travel great distances to experience the designated wild and scenic Kettle River. One of the most spectacular stretches of the river cuts through Banning State Park, near the small town of Sandstone. The park’s 17 miles of intertwining hiking trails allow for several hiking options. Beginning at the picnic area, the featured hike heads into the hardwood forests above the river valley, and then descends to the Quarry Trail along the river where pieces of history are evident in late 20th century village and quarry remains. As you walk along the river-cut sandstone cliffs you can see where a hard pebble, spinning in a former eddy, has carved one of the infamous kettles into the softer sandstone. Banning’s pine, mixed hardwood, and tamarack woods, as well as its wetland areas, make this an excellent area for birding.
