Beautiful prairie, blue mounds that are actually pink sandstone cliffs rising 100 feet off the flat prairie landscape, and a sizable bison herd are points of interest at Blue Mounds State Park in southwestern Minnesota where annual park attendance is more than 93,000 visits. This is one of many areas where the plains Indians of the 1800s depended on bison for survival. Bison were plentiful then as they roamed the endless prairies where food was abundant. Wolves, elk, and prairie chickens shared this ecosystem more than 200 years ago. Today, bison, a few coyotes, and some white-tailed deer roam the park.
